This new painting called “Dinner at Traditions” is the twelfth piece that is part of an evolving series exploring public interiors. The piece is 20x24 in. and is painted in oil on stretched canvas.

Traditions at the Glen in Johnson City, NY has a rich history that is directly connected to the industrial and social development of the Binghamton region. The origins stem back to 1918 when Elliot Spaulding, Senior Executive at Endicott Johnson (a major American shoe manufacturer), built his grand private mansion within a large estate overlooking the Susquehanna Valley.
Then, a few years later, during the 1920s, IBM purchased the property and transformed it into a corporate retreat and training center where the IBM CEO would reward his workers with leisure and recreation. During this time span, the space became known as the IBM Homestead or IBM Glen and often hosted employee retreats, including large “vacation tent city” gatherings. In 1937, John Van Kleek designed an 18-hole golf course and roughly 650 acres of surrounding land was used for additional recreation and nature trails.
Ultimately, IBM reduced its presence within Endicott, NY, and during the 1990s, through local investment, the space was transformed into the current “Traditions at the Glen,” resort, with the name reflecting the continual repurposing of the property throughout the past century, beginning as a private estate, then becoming an industrial retreat and corporate getaway to the current resort.
